Welcome to parenthood! As you embark on this incredible journey, you'll quickly realize that diapers are more than just a necessity - they're a daily part of your life. This newsletter is here to give you the inside scoop on all things diapers, from sizing to avoiding those dreaded blowouts.
Diaper Sizing: The Weighty Issue ⚖️
One of the most common questions new parents have is about diaper sizing. Is there a universal system? The short answer is no.
While most brands use a similar numbering system (Newborn, 1, 2, 3, etc.), the key is to remember that these numbers are tied to your baby's weight, not their age.
- Newborn (N): Typically for babies up to 10 lbs.
- Size 1: For babies between 8 - 14 lbs.
- Size 2: For babies between 12 - 18 lbs.
- Size 3: For babies between 16 - 28 lbs.
Pro-Tip: It never hurts to have a package of the next size handy at home! You'll need them eventually and you'll be glad you have them on hand when you do
Sizes Differ by Brand: One brand's "size 2" might fit snugly on your baby while another brand's "size 2" might be a bit loose. Pay close attention to the weight range on the packaging and be prepared to try a few different brands to find the best fit for your little one.
⚠️ Diaper Sizing: Height Also Matters! ⚠️
Your baby's weight is not the only factor to consider when sizing a diaper! Taller / longer babies might need a larger diaper to prevent blowouts going up their back. Just ask our co-founder, Mike...
The Art of Avoiding Blowouts & Leaks
The biggest diaper-related frustration for parents is blowouts. Here’s how you can minimize the mess:
- Check the Fit: The most common cause of leaks and blowouts is an improper fit. The diaper should be snug around your baby's waist and thighs, but not so tight that it leaves red marks.
- The Two-Finger Rule: A good way to check the fit is to see if you can slide two fingers comfortably under the waistband. If you can fit more, it might be too loose.
- Adjust the Leak Guards: After fastening the diaper, run your fingers along the leg openings to ensure the ruffles (the leak guards) are pulled out and not tucked in. This creates a seal that helps prevent leaks.
- Point it Down: For baby boys, a common cause of leaks is a misdirected stream. Always make sure their penis is pointing down before you fasten the diaper.

💥 Blowouts Happen 💥
"Look, I wish I could say you'll never deal with a blowout, but they will happen. Diapers can shift, even when perfectly applied, just from holding your baby or them wiggling around.
I learned this 36 hours after we got home from the hospital: I was feeding my daughter when things felt suddenly, alarmingly warm. I looked down to find a literal puddle of poo in my lap. Her diaper had shifted just from how I was holding her!
Don't let it get you down. As Forrest Gump observed, 's*** happens'. Clean yourself & your baby and keep at it."
📏 Big Baby, Big Mess 📐
"My wife & I are both pretty tall and our daughter got that gene. We were mostly fine with the size N's, but as she transitioned to 1's, we starting having multiple blowouts per day, mostly up her back.
Eventually, we bought 2's - even though she wasn't in the weight guidelines - so she could get the coverage she needed."
Still Getting Blowouts?
If you've done everything right, but you're still getting blowouts, it might be time to consider the next size of diaper.

Tips and Tricks to Make Changing Time Easier
A Note on Diaper Brands
While the weight ranges are similar across brands, there can be subtle differences in fit, absorbency, and materials. Some brands, like Pampers, Huggies, and Luvs, are widely available and well-loved. Other brands, like Honest or Dyper, focus on using more eco-friendly or plant-based materials. Many of the store brands are great - Mike likes the Up & Up diapers. Don't be afraid to try out different brands with small packs before committing to a bulk box.
